Some of my friends are shocked when they learn that I haven’t experienced most of the toughest content in FFXIV. I mean, I belonged to some of the best and most competitive legions in Aion. My Whitemage is extremely well geared, so what gives? Why am I not stressing about beating turn 5 in Coil or beating extreme mode titan? I mean I was taught how to heal by a woman who has been a #1 ranked IN THE WORLD healer in WoW (yes I give a lot of credit to miss Abssolute). I have great reflexes and instinct, so why am I not concerned about doing the most difficult content?
Because frankly, I don’t give a shit.
I realized this the other day as I was venturing into my first attempt at an extreme mode. I went into Garuda extreme with zero experience with some people in my FC. A few people gave up and left. However, for 2 hours, I stayed. Know what? We didn’t kill it. Now all the time, I was the last person to die with the tanks, after other people wiped to mechanics. However something else happened.
We started having fun. We quit fighting, and just had fun. We talked. When you are a loner type nerd, it is hard to find people like you. And there I was, with 7 other people (okay 1 being my hubby) just like me. We suddenly didn’t care about beating Garuda. We just started talking about common interests (ANIME!)
I’ve given a lot of thought to it. Do I want a static group where I have to schedule my life around running once instance? No. I played a game where I had to schedule my life around it (*cough* Aion *cough*). It just ended up not being fun. I want to play on my terms. Sure a challenge is nice, but not required.
So if you aren’t super competitive, and have more fun emoting in your house than killing things, it’s okay. You pay your sub (or not if you are playing a F2P game). Play the game you want, not the game someone wants you to play.
